Lunesta Insomnia Treatment
Lunesta (eszopiclone) is in a class of drugs called sedative/hypnotics or sleep medications. Lunesta affects chemicals in your brain that may affect sleep.
Lunesta (eszopiclone) is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent used as a treatment for insomnia. Eszopiclone is the active stereoisomer of zopiclone, and belongs to the class of drugs known as cyclopyrrones.
It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term use, unlike almost all other hypnotic sedatives, which are approved only for the relief of short-term (6-8 weeks) insomnia.
Lunesta Side Effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects such as an allergic reaction like difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, face, or tongue and hives, stop taking Lunesta and seek emergency medical attention.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, such as headache and unpleasant taste. If these become bothersome, contact your doctor.
A problem that may occur when sleep medicines are stopped is known as “rebound insomnia.” This means that a person may have more trouble sleeping the first few nights after the medicine is stopped than before starting the medicine. If you should experience rebound insomnia, do not get discouraged. This problem usually goes away on its own after 1 or 2 nights.
Lunesta may be habit forming. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause withdrawal effects if you have taken it continuously for several weeks. Talk to your doctor about the safe use of this medication.
Lunesta side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Lunesta Dosage
As with all prescription medicines, it’s important to take Lunesta (eszopiclone) as prescribed by your doctor.
Just one Lunesta tablet taken immediately before bedtime helps most people fall asleep quickly. In a clinical study, most people who took Lunesta slept an average of 7-8 hours. So make sure you’re able to get a full night’s sleep before taking your Lunesta tablet.
Health Tips
Excercise. More than 50% of American men and women do not get enough physical activity to provide health benefits. For adults, thirty minutes of moderate physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week is recommended. It doesn't take a lot of time or money, but it does take commitment. Start slowly, work up to a satisfactory level, and don't overdo it. You can develop one routine, or you can do something different every day. Find fun ways to stay in shape and feel good, such as dancing, gardening, cutting the grass, swimming, walking, or jogging. Read more Health Tips »
