According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), an estimated 66% of U.S. adults 20 years and over are either overweight or obese based on a survey done in 2003-2004. The prevalence of obesity increased from 15% in the 1976–1980 survey to 32% in the 2003–2004 survey.

The report warns that, based on current trends, 33% of men and 28% of women will be obese by 2010. Their government says it is the “most accurate estimate so far” of future obesity rates.
